How I Evaluate Espresso Shower Screen Quality: Notes from a Supplier Visit

I visited a coffee parts supplier in Jiangmen, Guangdong, to review several aftermarket espresso machine shower screen samples. One small detail immediately gave me a reason to look more closely.

One La Marzocco-compatible sample had an edge sharp enough that I could feel it with my finger. Looking closer, I could see visible burrs along the rim.

The supplier explained that the sample had been prepared in a hurry and had not yet been fully polished.

One unfinished sample does not necessarily represent normal production quality. But it gave me a useful starting point for asking more questions.

Observations on the Samples

On another Rancilio-compatible sample, several holes appeared uneven or not fully formed.

From visual inspection alone, I could not determine how much this would affect water distribution or extraction. That would require proper machine testing. Still, it was something I would want to examine more closely before approving the sample.

I asked whether the shower screens were stamped or photo-etched, what grade of stainless steel was being used, and whether the sheet thickness was 0.4 mm or 0.5 mm.

The supplier confirmed that the screens were stamped in-house. Some of the other specifications still needed to be confirmed with their technical team.

What I Check Before Approving a Shower Screen Sample

When reviewing an aftermarket shower screen, these are some of the first things I look at:

Edge finishing and burrs — Check for sharp edges, visible burrs and incomplete finishing.

Hole consistency — Look for incomplete, blocked or visibly inconsistent holes. Any effect on water distribution or extraction should be verified through proper machine testing.

Stainless steel grade — Confirm the material specification and supporting documentation when required.

Sheet thickness and dimensions — Compare actual measurements with the approved specification.

Machine compatibility — Verify dimensions and fit against the intended machine model or group head rather than relying only on a compatibility label.

Sample-to-batch consistency — A good sample matters, but repeatability across production batches matters even more.

What I Took Away From the Visit

I don’t expect a salesperson to have every technical answer immediately. What matters more is whether specifications can be confirmed, samples can be validated, and production can consistently match what was approved.

I also know that one supplier visit and a few samples only tell me so much. I had not seen the production line, and I would want to review additional samples before making a final supplier decision.

But the unfinished edge stayed with me.

Quality is never an accident. That, I believe
