E61 Group Gasket: 8mm vs. 8.5mm — Which Size?

Replacing the group head gasket is one of the most common routine maintenance tasks for E61 espresso machines. Choosing between an 8mm and 8.5mm gasket sounds simple, but there isn’t one size that works best for every machine. The main difference is how the gasket affects portafilter lock-in position and fit.

💡 Service Tip
When the group head is already being serviced, it can make sense to inspect the gasket, shower screen, and related O-rings at the same time. Replacing worn components together can help reduce repeat disassembly and avoid another service visit shortly afterward.
Don’t Choose by “E61” Alone
Not every E61-style machine uses exactly the same setup. Portafilter design, group head condition, gasket wear, and even different portafilters on the same machine can change the locking position. That means: “It’s an E61 machine” is not always enough information to choose the correct gasket.
Check the Locking Position
A practical way to evaluate fit is to look at where the portafilter handle stops when fully locked. Think of the group head like a clock. Around 6 o’clock is commonly considered a normal reference point, but some machines and portafilters may naturally lock slightly left or right.
